The Chew: Spicy Peanut Popcorn Balls

The co-hosts of The Chew were sharing their tips for throwing a great party without spending a ton of money. One great tip Carla Hall had, was to combine cheap ingredients to create a fancy looking snack with very little effort. This snack costs less than a dollar to put together and tastes incredible, so you know it would be a hit at your party!

The Chew: Spicy Peanut Popcorn Balls Recipe

Carla Hall shared a recipe that costs less than 50 cents to enjoy, and it’s a great sweet snack to serve to your party guests. ([email protected] / Flickr)

  • 2 C peanuts
  • 1 C sugar
  • 6 C popped popcorn
  • 1 C corn syrup
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp peanut oil
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/3 C water
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 C brown sugar
  • 6 tbsp butter

The Chew: Spicy Peanut Popcorn Balls Recipe Directions

  1. In a large cast-iron skillet, add peanut oil and heat over medium heat
  2. Add peanuts and toast until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes
  3. Set aside to cool
  4. Add the soy sauce and stir to combine
  5. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper
  6. In a large pot, add the sugar, water, and peanuts, then stir to combine
  7. Heat over medium heat until the sugar begins to caramelize and coat the peanuts – about 8 minutes
  8. Continue shaking the peanuts to coat in the melted sugar
  9. remove the peanuts to the parchment, sprinkle with cayenne, and let cool
  10. Break cooled peanuts into small pieces
  11. In a large bowl, put the popcorn and peanuts, then mix to combine
  12. In a small saucepan, add the brown sugar, corn syrup, butter, and salt
  13. Bring to a boil
  14. Stir for 2 minutes until the sugar reaches 255 degrees on a thermometer
  15. Working fast, pour over the popcorn and stir to coat
  16. Grease your hands to form the mixture into 1 1/2-inch popcorn balls
