Today Show: New Orleans-Style Shrimp Boil Recipe

SORTEDFood took over the kitchen on Today Show to share a recipe they learned on the road. Find out how you can make New Orleans-Style Shrimp Boil. (moonlightbulb / flickr)

This dish was inspired by the classic New Orleans meal of a Crawfish Boil, but this version uses shrimp, which is easier to source around the country. You could substitute bell peppers or another vegetable if you don’t want to use mushrooms or potatoes. Use this recipe as a template and don’t be afraid to tweak it to meet the unique needs of your own kitchen.

  • 2 stalks Celery
  • 7 oz Button Mushrooms
  • 1 wedged Orange
  • 4 tbsp Creole Seasoning
  • 1 tsp ground Clove
  • 4.5 lb in-shell Whole Shrimp (and/or Crawfish)
  • 2 lb Mussels
  • 14 oz waxy New Potatoes
  • 4 cloves peeled Garlic
  • 1 bunch Thyme
  • 1 tbsp Cayenne Pepper
  • 3 frozen ears Corn on the Cob (halved)
  • 2 tbsp Salt

Today Show: New Orleans-Style Shrimp Boil Recipe Directions

  1. Wash celery, mushrooms, and potatoes before use.
  2. Combine celery with mushrooms and potatoes in a saucepan. Add whole garlic cloves, orange, and spices, along with 16 cups of water.
  3. Bring the pot contents to a boil. Then cook 15 minutes.
  4. Place shrimp in a bucket of cold water for two to three minutes. Then drain and refresh the water another two or three times to help cool and clean the shrimp.
  5. Add shrimp (along with crawfish and/or mussels, if using) to the pan. Return to a simmer.
  6. Simmer the pan for about three minutes. Then turn off heat. Add frozen corn, which will carryover cook as the dish rests for about 10 minutes.
  7. Transfer to a serving platter and pass family-style at your table.
